In a life or death situation, most of us take being able to dial 000 for granted. But there are some in our community who face big barriers to this seemingly easy task. For deaf South Australians reaching the emergency services in a time of need can be really challenging.
I’ve heard from members of the deaf community recently about a need to improve their access to triple zero and we’ve discussed how new technology could be used to make this happen. Today Shadow Disability Minister, Heidi Girolamo and I stood with deaf man and Support Coordinator with The Deaf Butterfly Effect, Ben Hatchard to bring this issue to the public’s attention. We’re calling on the government to back an innovative app-based solution to make life that bit easier for a vulnerable group of South Australians. I hope they step up and make this a priority.
