Designs for an international standard mountain bike trail in Mount Remarkable National Park are about to commence, with experts World Trail announced today as the successful contractors for the design phase.
The construction of the mountain bike loop, which will be built to a standard to gain International Mountain Biking Association “EPIC” accreditation, is one of the key new projects to be established as part of the $10 million Remarkable Southern Flinders Ranges project.
The South Australian and Federal Governments last month announced that they would jointly fund works across the park precinct which includes Mount Remarkable National Park, areas of the Wirrabara Range and Telowie Gorge and Spaniard’s Gully Conservation Parks.
Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said the precinct would become a world-class adventure tourism destination.
“World Trail is one of the largest and most experienced MTB trail companies in the world and have designed, planned and constructed hundreds of projects in 20 countries,” said Minister Speirs.
“To have them involved in the project is an excellent step forward in seeing an internationally accredited trail developed.
“Plans for the Remarkable Southern Flinders Ranges project include the new international standard mountain bike track and other beginner level or intermediate mountain biking, upgraded trails for hiking, including a new multi-day hike and improved camping and visitor facilities.
“The Southern Flinders Ranges will become another jewel in the crown for South Australia’s nature-based tourism industry.
“This is a key project as part of our Parks 2025 strategy to reinvigorate our regional communities and cement South Australia’s place as a world-class eco-tourism destination.”
Member for Stuart Dan van Holst Pellekaan said an engagement hub for the project had been established to update the community on the progress of the projects and to keep them informed about their opportunities to provide feedback.
“The community will play an important role in shaping the future of Southern Flinders Ranges and will be asked to contribute their ideas towards the design of visitor facilities and experiences that will be created across the precinct,” said Minister van Holst Pellekaan.
“There is also an initial online survey we are encouraging people to complete to seek their views on some key elements of the project’s promotion, and we welcome suggestions.”

The Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife, Regional Development Australia Yorke & Mid North, Northern Areas Council, District Council of Mount Remarkable, Port Pirie Regional Council and the Nukunu traditional owners were foundation partners to secure the collaborative funding for the project.
Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North is supporting the delivery of the Mount Remarkable EPIC mountain bike trail.
Regional Development Australia Yorke and Mid North CEO Kelly-Anne Saffin said this is an incredible opportunity for the Southern Flinders to be a world class tourism destination.
“The appointment of Glen Jacobs and World Trail who is recognised as one of Australia’s pre-eminent trail designers will also work closely with the local community and by building this partnership together we will be able to grow our regional expertise.”
The partnership brings together a unique group of organisations committed to working with the State Government on projects to further advance and promote the Southern Flinders region as a tourism destination.
